Equine Lecture Series - Winter 2010 

 

February 24:

"Topics in Reproduction" - Selected topics in repro to include AI, emryo transfer, birth, dystocias, tears, and various genetic diseases.

  

March 10:

"Strains, Sprains and Other Soft Tissue Injuries" - Forget osteoarthritis...we'll be discussing the anatomy, biomechanics and most common injuries associated with ligaments, tendons and muscle.

 
Spring Term: (order of appearance subject to change)
 

March 31:

Founder/Laminitis:

A review and update of this devastating disease with a discussion of etiology and mechanisms of disease, risk factors, clinical signs, diagnosis, consequences and possible treatments.

 

April 14:

Equine Cushings:

A disease of older horses, we'll talk about the general condition including the clinical signs, diagnosis, consequences and possible treatments.

 

April 28:

A Review of Dentistry:

Often overlooked by owner and veterinarian alike, we'll discuss the importance of a regular dental examination and a dental disease preventative program.  We'll also talk about the procedure and what you should expect from your dental veterinarian with a few comments on the "lay dentist."

 

May 12:

Ownership 102:  Being your own veterinarian ... sometimes!

We'll discuss bandaging techniques, injections and the like and discuss a good time to have a "practical lab" at the clinic in June.

 

May 26:

Pharmacology 101:  Twice a day or once daily, injectable or oral...

We'll be discussing the some basics in pharmacology such as how certain drugs work, why the dosing schedule is twice a day or once daily, adminstration routes, and proper handling.

 

Lectures are set to begin at 7:00 pm and generally last 1 to 2 hours and are held in the main lecture hall of the Science and Technology building on the main BMCC campus.

 
These lecturess are presented in cooperation with BMCC's Continueing Education Department.  Classes do qualify for college credit.  Those pursuing credit are required to attend all classes and will be required to submit a paper due at the end of the lecture series.
 
You can register for classes at http://bluecc.edu/continuingeducation or just prior to the start of class.  Attendees are encouraged to bring any ideas, concerns or questions regarding their horse/s to be discussed in class.

We'll get you one on one with a horse and go over bandaging, injections, a selected topics in the clinic.
